Loteria de Navidad 2014 at a glance

Loteria de Navidad ticket

The 2014 Loteria de Navidad also known as the Spanish Christmas Lottery is probably the biggest lottery event in the world. Every year during Christmas the raffle begins and prizes in the sum of €2.24 Billion are being taken by lucky winners.

The Spanish Christmas Lottery is based on 5-digit raffle tickets (billets) spanning from numbers between 00000-99999.  Due to the incredibly high worldwide demand to participate in the navidad raffle, each billet is printed in only 160 series with each billet consisting of 10 décimos (1/10 of a ticket). To put it simply, each billet (also known as ‘book’) consists of 10 tickets with the same numbers. So for example, the ticket 12345 is printed 10 times under different series, and each series appears 160 times.

The raffle itself is conducted via 2 spheres one big and one small. The big sphere contains 100,000 balls, each with a unique 5 digits number on it from 00000-99999 and the small sphere contains 1,807 balls, each with a prize sum in Euros on it:

  • 1 ball for the first prize, called el Gordo.
  • 1 ball for the second prize.
  • 1 ball for the third prize.
  • 2 balls for the fourth prizes.
  • 8 balls for the fifth prizes.
  • 1,794 balls for the small prizes, called la Pedrea, literally “the pebble-avalanche” or “stoning”.

2 Children, one assigned to each sphere are in charge of taking out the balls and signing the results out loud, one for the winning numbers and the other signs out the winning prize. This process usually takes about 8-9 hours during which Spain and the entire world are waiting with anticipation to hear their lucky numbers.

The winning prizes (in Euros) are distributed as follows:
